Job Description
General Summary The Set Surveyor is responsible for collecting information such as lens data, reference images, photogrammetry, set scans, and motion control data from stages and delivering these assets to the CG Supervisor, Matchmove Artists, and VFX Leads to help insure the best possible matchmove in the most economical amount of time.
Job Functions - Establish and/or coordinate survey workflows, processes, and procedures under the guidance of the CG Supervisor, Set Survey Lead, and Matchmove Lead.
- Capture camera movements to enable the creation of digital cameras that fit accurately and convincingly into stage plates.
- Capture and process HDR images for CG Lighters and Look Dev Artists.
- Photograph and 3D scans stage and puppet references needed for CG assets including texture reference, puppet turntables, photogrammetry, etc.
- Perform shot matchmoving, tracking, and scene setup, as assigned.
- Work closely with Camera Operators, Previs, Techvis, and VFX Leads for technical breakdowns and other camera-related needs for VFX; control the operation and setup of witness cameras, as required.
- Communicate and facilitate the delivery of survey, camera, and set data between stages and VFX while monitoring and reporting any issues related to visual effects compatibility.
- Train and guide any new Set Survey Artists through all the relevant stages of the production process.
- Research new developments in hardware and software.
- Manage all survey equipment and ensure proper training and usage.
Qualifications - 3+ years of related CG experience; feature film, preferred.
- Understanding of photography and the effects of different lenses on perspectives.
- Understanding of motion control rigs and camera systems.
- Ability to reproduce exact camera moves within a computer environment.
- Experience with on set survey and motion control equipment, a plus.
- Professional experience using 3DEqualizer, or equivalent 2D and 3D matchmove tracking software.
- Experience with Maya and Nuke.
- Stereographic experience, a plus.
- Strong understanding of the stop motion process.
- Must be detail oriented and highly organized.
- Ability to interact with peers and managers to exchange semi-complex information related to assigned activities.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, including the ability to work efficiently under tight deadlines.
