SDC 2025 Engineering Internship & Co-op Programs

full-time, paid, Spring semester / Summer 2025

At Steven Douglas Corp (SDC) we design and build innovative custom, automated machines that are used in a wide variety of applications and industries. We work in a fast -paced, exciting, and highly technical environment where our team never designs the same machine twice and is often challenged with solving problems with no standard solution.

Mechanical Engineering Co-op/ Interns at SDC are passionate, hardworking individuals that have a strong engineering education background and want to learn how to use machine design fundamentals and integrate them with out-of-the-box, creative ideas to create unique automated machines.

Programmatic Plan

Our exciting internship and co-op programs at SDC are designed to help you learn and develop essential skills to prepare you to be an innovative leader in your chosen career path. Within our program, and working under the supervision of our seasoned mechanical engineers, the SDC Mechanical Engineer Co-op/Intern will gain hands-on experience in:

Introduction to Machine Design:

• Utilize Solidworks to finalize the mechanical design of machine sub-assemblies.
• Learn materials and finishes used in machine design.
• Specify materials and finishes in machine part design.
• Learn tolerancing and fits used in machine design.
• Apply tolerances and fits in machine part design.
• Learn how manufacturing processes (conventional machining, wire EDM, waterjet, welding, and sheet metal fabrication) drive machine part design.
• Learn how commercial components are specified in machine design.
• Create detail drawings for machine sub-assemblies and custom machined parts.
• Release custom machined and commercial parts to manufacturing and sourcing.

Mechanical Design of Machine Sub-assemblies:

• Concept a machine design solution on the sub-assembly level.
• Perform all required calculations for the concepted solution.
• Utilize Solidworks to execute the design of the concepted solution.
• Specify all commercial components for the concepted solution.
• Drive the design through the approval phases.
• Create detail drawings for the sub-assembly and all related custom machined parts.
• Release custom machined and commercial parts to manufacturing and sourcing.

Machine Design Debug:

• Execute a machine debug plan.
• Learn how to identify technical issues.
• Learn how to execute solutions to solve identified issues.

Requirements:

• Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related coursework.
• Class status – Junior (by credit hour) or above.
• Knowledge of 3D CAD software experience, SolidWorks preferred.
