Baker Botts L.L.P. currently has an opening for a Paralegal Clerk in our Intellectual Property department. The Paralegal Clerk position is an entry-level position typically filled by candidates with little or no legal experience. Most candidates are college graduates who plan to attend law school but desire a first-hand look into the legal profession first. For this position, we seek a graduate with a bachelor's degree and excellent grades. Under the direct supervision of Paralegals, the Paralegal Clerk will assist with all aspects of our practice and the position requires flexibility and some long hours. This is a full-time, non-exempt position with excellent benefits located in our Dallas office.
Essential functions and responsibilities - Organizing and prioritizing numerous tasks under time constraints.
- Organizing client files.
- Preparing exhibit and witness notebooks.
- Indexing and coding documents.
- Uploading documents and information to databases and performing database searches.
- Reviewing PTO documents for accuracy.
- Proofreading patents.
- Researching and updating patent ownership information.
- Preparing notebooks for patent families showing relationships between claims.
- Other tasks as assigned by Paralegals, Legal Secretaries, and the Office Administrator.
Qualifications - Bachelor's degree required from an accredited four-year college or university.
- Some work experience in a Law Firm or Professional Services environment is preferred.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including MSWord, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Ability to learn and use databases, including public and agency resources.
- Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals.
- Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints.
- Ability to proofread materials for contextual, grammatical, typographical, or spelling errors.
- Must have strong organizational, decision-making skills and problem-solving skills.
- Must be reliable and a self-starter.
- Ability to learn and operate standard office equipment such as computer, photocopiers, fax machines, etc.
- Read, write, and speak English at the college level.
Extent of Contact (Within and outside the Firm)- Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with partners, associates, paralegals, management, secretarial, support staff, vendors, and building maintenance.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate by e-mail and telephone providing information with courtesy and tact.
Physical Demands - Position requires working at a computer for substantial periods of time, as well as walking and lifting to 20 pounds.
- Bending, reaching, extensive keyboarding and use of computer mouse.
Working Condition and Environment - Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust and temperature.
- Work regularly requires more than the standard work week to perform the essential duties of the position.
- This role may be hybrid and will require a minimum of three days per week (or at least 60%) present in the office, and up to two days per week (40%) may be performed remotely.
