Summary/Objective 

The brick mason position is responsible for kiln car bed building using vermiculite, castable refractory cement, refractory blocks and high temperature insulation.  The brick mason also does repairs to the bed of the kiln cars.  The brick mason will assist in repairs to the kilns.  The brick mason at times will lay and bind building material such as brick and concrete block with mortar to construct or repair wall, partitions, sewers and other structures.  

Essential Functions

• Build the bed on a new kiln car using castable refractory cement, high temperature insulation, vermiculite, firebrick, castable mortar and refractory blocks.  

• Remove and replace refractory block on empty kiln car bed. Straighten block on kiln car.  

• Use wet saw to cut brick or block.  

• Calculate angles and courses and determine vertical and horizontal alignment of courses.  

• Using trowel, spread heat-resistant mix onto the sides of kiln car.  

• Build brick or block walls for buildings.  Repairs or replaces brick in building.  

• May erect scaffolding or other installation structure.  

• Lay and align brick or block to repair structures or high temperature equipment (kilns and dryers).   

• Follow company’s safe work procedures.  

• Maintain clean and orderly work area.

Supervisory Responsibility 

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.  

Work Environment 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and moving mechanical parts.  The employee is frequently exposed to a variety of extreme conditions.  The noise level in the work environment can be loud.  

Physical Demands 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is frequently required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, or crouch.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.    

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work 

This is a full-time position.  Hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., 40 hours per week.  

Travel 

No travel is expected for this position.  

Required Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED.  

• 3 years masonry or bricklaying experience or technical training program or any equivalent combination.  

Preferred Education and Experience 

• High school diploma or GED.  

• 5 years masonry or bricklaying experience.  

• Training in general safety.
